Michigan Football: Wolverines post sluggish win over Maryland
2. Ty Johnson is one of the best running backs in the Big Ten
Jonathan Taylor and J.K. Dobbins have stolen all the accolades given to Big Ten running backs thus far. That tandem is more than deserving of the headlines, but there are several other great running backs in the conference that have more than earned their shot at the spotlight.
One of those under-the-radar runners is Maryland’s senior starting tailback, Ty Johnson. Entering the game he led the Terps in carries and rushing yards and had also racked up a team-best 545 all-purpose yards.
The Maryland offense started painstakingly slow and finished equally lethargically. They tallied a measly 220 yards of total offense, including a mediocre rate of 4.0 yards per carry. While the offense sputtered, Johnson still found a way to put the team on his back.

With Maryland trailing 3-0, Johnson fielded Jake Moody’s kickoff and returned in 98 yards for a touchdown to give Maryland the lead. He would finish the game with just 103 all-purpose yards and the touchdows. The numbers don’t do this talented playmaker justice. He’s a gamebreaker, and someone every coach wouldn’t want in their arsenal.
