Oklahoma Football: Texas survives Sooners’ rally, wins Red River Rivalry
By Zach Bigalke
3. Both sides are still College Football Playoff contenders
The instant classic at the Cotton Bowl will surely vault Texas back up the AP Top 25 this week, while losing will send the Sooners downward out of the top 10. Both teams, however, will remain real threats to claim the Big 12 title. Along with West Virginia, they are the only teams that really look consistent enough to play for the conference crown.
And winning the Big 12 as a one-loss champion could be enough this season to get into the College Football Playoff, especially with struggles in other conferences around the country. Texas showed their resilience and the depth of talent that is beginning to be assembled by Tom Herman in Austin, while Oklahoma remains a high-powered offensive attack.
Their fates are not entirely in their own control, at least not on a national level. But once the College Football Playoff selection committee starts to deliberate later in October, they will surely look at both the Longhorns and the Sooners as they begin to assess which teams merit consideration for the four-team playoff this year.
