Texas A&M Football: 5 takeaways from defensive showdown vs. Kentucky
By Shelbie Warr
Kentucky and Texas A&M football were locked in an all out defensive battle for four quarters and then some. What did we learn about these two teams?
This game was equal parts exciting and frustrating for both fan bases. The Aggies get their second SEC win and the first win for the West vs. the East so far this year. It took overtime to do it, but Texas A&M got it done and broke quite a few hearts while doing it.
If you would have told me that Kentucky would have been undefeated coming into this weekend, I would have called you crazy. However, that is what happened and now they are 5-1 as the Aggies improve to 4-2 on the 2018 season. Let’s talk takeaways now shall we?
5. Kellen Mond looks less confident and his line is to blame
Coming into the season, Kellen Mond looked like a totally different quarterback from what we saw in the 2017 season. Now though, we are starting to get that scared young sophomore back that had to replace Nick Starkel a year ago and didn’t seem to know what to do at most times.
What happened? Well, quite a lot, but it all boils down to one thing — a struggling offensive line. To say that they have forgotten how to block would be putting it nicely. This group is not protecting their quarterback until it’s crunch time and it really matters. What they need to learn is that you cannot continue to wait until the last play or two of the game to go balls to the wall.
Simply put, if the offensive line doesn’t figure it out, the rest of this season could get scary for the Aggies, especially if your name is Kellen Mond and you play quarterback.
