West Virginia football strolled into homecoming weekend against a Kansas team who was more interested in a fight than a dance.
The final score doesn’t give the full story of Saturday’s Homecoming Game in Morgantown, but Dana Holgorsen and the Mountaineers moved to 5-0 on the season and 3-0 in Big 12-play.
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 14-point lead in the first quarter against Kansas, and running back Leddie Brown was responsible for both scores — one rushing and one receiving. He finished with 107 yards on 11 carries.
Heisman-hopeful Will Grier’s performance didn’t live up to his typical standards, throwing three first-half interceptions, but he managed enough key moments to propel the ‘Eers past the Jayhawks, including an evasion of defenders on a third-down scramble that would’ve made you think Johnny Manziel was still playing.
Defensive coordinator Tony Gibson has his side of the ball playing at an incredibly high level, and instead of the Mountaineer offense carrying the team, it’s been the defense. They allowed a touchdown as time expired, but still held Kansas to just 22 points. That should almost guarantee a victory every week, especially for a Mountaineer offense who is averaging 42 points per game.
What can we takeaway from Saturday’s win against Kansas? Should Mountaineer Nation be worried? Or is a win still a win?
