Mississippi State football is 4-2 and undefeated in the SEC West. Oh, what can change over the course of 60 minutes on a Saturday in the SEC.

If you were anywhere near Starkville, Mississippi following Mississippi State’s loss to Florida at home you could have heard the sound of the sky falling. The Bulldogs had scored one touchdown in their first eight quarters of SEC play and had just lost in embarrassing fashion to their former head coach, Dan Mullen.

Mullen validated his new team’s prowess a week later, upending a Top 10 LSU team at home. Mississippi State fans might have been too distracted to notice thanks to a season-defining victory over No. 8 Auburn.

Nick Fitzgerald’s early-season struggles and losses to Kentucky and Florida had prompted even the staunchest Bulldogs’ supporters to begin to doubt. Fitzgerald tallied a pair of rushing touchdowns, breaking the SEC’s rushing record for quarterbacks in the process.

The big win proved this team isn’t ready to throw in the towel. And, as crazy as it seems, is still very much alive in the SEC West. Their upcoming road trip to Death Valley to play LSU will go a long way to substantiating those dreams, but the fact of the matter is those hopes are alive and well. That’s something that seemed unfathomable as recently as a week ago.

If Mississippi State beats LSU, who proved themselves to be mortal with a loss to Florida in Week 6, the Bulldogs’ season goes from over to a tremendous success, overnight. That was all made possible by the win over Auburn. Coaches hate to use the term “must win” games, especially so early in the season, but the Auburn game was unequivocally a “must win” for this team. And they passed the test with flying colors.
