5. Hello, Brock Purdy

It was apparently early on in last week’s game against Oklahoma State, Zeb Noland’s inconsistencies were hurting the Iowa State offense. Matt Campbell decided to make the switch to true freshman quarterback Brock Purdy. That decision payed off and then some as Purdy looked absolutely sensational against the Cowboys. At the end of the day, Purdy completed 18 of 23 passes for 318 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for 84 yards and a touchdown.

This might have been the best thing to happen to the Iowa State offense as it completely opens up another dimension of the offense that’s been missing for most of Campbell’s tenure: a dual-threat quarterback. Yes, some of you might say Joel Lanning, but Lanning never had the arm that Purdy possesses. Quarterbacks like Jacob Park and Kyle Kempt are good passers, but not so great in the running department. Purdy opens up the offense so much more with his mobility.

Even though there is tape on him now, I expect Purdy to give the West Virginia defense fits. Even though the Mountaineers defense has improved, it’s still by no means a lockdown defense.
