3. A stingy Iowa State defense

Iowa State has really started to garner a reputation of playing stingy defense in a conference that relies so heavily on the offensive side of the ball. The Cyclones have established veteran stars in players such as Willie Harvey, Marcel Spears Jr., and the dynamic cornerback duo of D’Andre Payne and Brian Peavy. However, there is a lot of youth as well, with players such as freshman linebackers O’Rien Vance and Mike Rose.

More from Iowa State Cyclones

There aren’t many individual stars on the Cyclones defense, but do they play some sound team defense. In all five games this season, Iowa State has held every single one of their opponents below their season average, yes even the 40-plus points allowed to both Oklahoma schools were below their respective season averages, which gives an idea how good both schools are. West Virginia has averaged 41.5 points per game this season and I expect Iowa State to hold them under that mark.

Iowa State’s defense will be a major key for this team throughout the rest of the season. If they can slow down West Virginia, they can slow down every other team on the rest of their schedule.
