7. Herm Edwards – Arizona State

  • Record: 3-3 (1-2)
  • Grade: C+

There wasn’t a coaching hire that made me raise my eyebrows and scratch my head more in the offseason than Herm Edwards being brought in to Tempe to replace Todd Graham. Edwards was a twice fired coach in the NFL, compiling an overall record of 54-74 in eight seasons as an NFL head coach with the Chiefs and Jets.

And that was a decade ago! Edwards last coached a game in 2008! He had never even been a college coordinator – he last coached in college at San Jose State in 1989 as a defensive backs coach.

The results so far, however, have been… okay? The Sun Devils haven’t been the dumpster fire that I expected them to be, but they’re also just 3-3 despite a decent bit of talent returning for Edwards. Todd Graham recruited solidly in Tempe, and Edwards inherited a veteran quarterback and talented skill-position players, including wide receiver N’Keal Harry, who many project as a first round NFL Draft pick.

Edwards had Arizona State in the Top-25 after a 2-0 start that included a victory over Michigan State, but they’re just 1-3 since then. Arizona State could still be a factor in the PAC-12’s South race down the stretch if they are to get back on track.

It will likely be several years before we know for sure if the Herm Edwards hire was the right move at Arizona State. Will he be able to recruit well enough to keep Arizona State competitive?
