If you thought the 2018 college football season couldn’t get any crazier — think again. Now with the season more than halfway through and the end of the regular season fast approaching, it’s now or never.
This week providing enticing results mostly because the race for conference titles are starting to gain steam and perhaps more teams than expected are in the hunt for postseason action.
From the underdog win to the crucial victories, Week 8 could stand as a possible turning point of the season when looking in retrospect.
Before we gear up for the final quarter of the year, here are five takeaways from yet another wild Saturday in college football.
5. College football just got a whole lot more interesting
Undoubtedly one of the most exciting matchups on Saturday was the primetime game between Ohio State and Purdue.
The Boilermakers pulled off one of the best upset wins of the year, taking down a formidable Buckeyes team loaded with talent. Purdue not only defended its home turf but also did a number on Ohio State, tearing apart the Buckeyes, 49-20.
The most interesting aspect of this game was that by the end of the third quarter, it was a 21-6 game. That is until the Boilermakers erupted for four scores in the fourth quarter.
In an uncharacteristically bad 15 minutes for the Buckeyes, Purdue was able to turn an upset win into a baffling display of offense.
The fallout of Ohio State’s first loss of the season may speak volumes as to how the season will play out — most importantly, the makeup of the College Football Playoff field — which just got that much more interesting.
Ohio State’s loss definitely played a factor in affecting the playoff composition very similar to the way Georgia’s defeat impacted the field as well.
Now, each team rests with one loss and there are still future games that will be tough to walk away with a win — which has the chance to alter the playoff even further.
In each of these conferences, the team that stood at the top of the divisions were taken down and were proven to be capable of defeat.
In any case, upset wins are captivating (unless of course your team is on the losing end) and always have the chance to set things in motion.
