College football recruiting continues to progress as results on the field play out for each respective school. Here’s the latest news and notes through Week 8.

The countdown to the early signing period is dwindling. Precious few days remain in the month of October, meaning the calendar will read November and then December soon enough. Programs around the nation are putting the finishing touches on their haul of 2019 recruits, starting with a non-traditional school that isn’t often named among the common national recruiting powers.

1. Tony Davis commits to Duke

It wasn’t just the big names that pulled out big recruiting wins. The Duke Blue Devils secured their first 4-star commitment of 2019 with the pledge of North Carolina native Tony Davis. The talented cornerback had offers from Florida and Georgia, but opted to stay closer to home and play in Durham, NC.

If Duke is able to hang onto Davis they’ll land their eighth highest-rated recruit since rankings started being tracked in the early 2000’s. David Cutcliffe might not be a Nick Saban or Dabo Swinney, but he’s the kind of coach that players want to play for. Sometimes that makes all the difference.
