Miami Football: 3 bold predictions for ACC clash with Boston College
3. Mark Richt plays musical quarterbacks
The Miami Hurricanes are in a complete conundrum regarding their quarterback situation. When Coach Richt arrived in Coral Gables to be the head football coach he said Malik Rosier would never play for his Hurricanes. In 2016, instead of prepping a quarterback for the 2017 season and beyond, Richt chose it as a time to play Brad Kaaya for the majority of most ball games.
Malik Rosier, who needed the seasoning after having only one career start in his career, threw four passes and carried the ball twice in ’16. Kaaya chose to leave early for the NFL and Rosier was left to be the starter for Miami.

In 2017, instead of getting freshman N’Kosi Perry game reps, Richt chose to ride with Rosier until one series in the Pitt game where he decided Evan Shirreffs would come in. It was a total disaster and the then-undefeated Hurricanes lost to the 4-7 Pitt Panthers. Miami then dropped a blowout loss to Clemson in the ACC Championship Game and the Orange Bowl to Wisconsin. Fans hoped the 2018 season would be different.
Miami opened the season in Arlington, TX for a neutral site game against the LSU Tigers. Rosier played that entire game with Perry suspended and Miami lost again. The Hurricanes had lost four straight games and now have lost five straight games to Power 5 opponents after the UVA upset loss in Week 7. Heading into Week 9 Mark Richt came out with the conviction that Rosier would start and that he was the best chance to win, but has since wavered a bit and it feels like both Rosier and Perry will play against BC.
While Rosier will start, Perry will play and this leads you to wonder if Richt will play musical quarterbacks throughout the football game. Don’t forget, freshman Jarren Williams can still play in four games and keep his redshirt this season. Rosier stumbled against lowly FIU before Perry came in. Perry started the FSU game on a slow foot and threw three second half touchdowns for the ‘Canes victory. The lack of a consistent starting quarterback means Richt has no faith in his own system, recruiting, or position group his son coaches.
