Georgia Football: Bulldogs best Florida to seize control of SEC East
1. Jake Fromm silenced the doubters
Georgia’s entire bye week was spent with critics of sophomore quarterback Jake Fromm calling for his benching in favor of freshman phenom Justin Fields. Fromm was coming off the worst game of his young career in terms of passer efficiency two weeks ago in Baton Rouge in a humbling 36-16 loss to LSU. Fromm completed just 16-of-34 passes for 209 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.
He struggled mightily against an aggressive and physical LSU front-seven as they harassed Fromm all afternoon long in the bayou state. Facing a similarly aggressive and physical defense this week in Jacksonville against Florida, many wondered whether Kirby Smart would give an extended look to Fields as a change-of-pace due to the likelihood that Fromm would once again struggle.
How quickly we’ve all forgotten how impressive Jake Fromm was as a freshman last season, and that one game does not define him as a quarterback. Credit to Kirby Smart for sticking with his guy, and not panicking after one off-week.
He rebounded nicely in the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, leading his Bulldogs to a win over the Gators that once again thrusts them to the head of the SEC East table. Fromm completed 16-of-23 passes for 218 yards and three touchdowns.
He wasn’t overly flashy, but he made play-after-play when Georgia had to have it, and avoided any crucial mistakes. Georgia won the turnover battle 3-0 against Florida, which was the ultimate difference in a game that was close throughout.
