USC Football: Arizona State Sun Devils stun Trojans at Coliseum
USC Football entered Week 9 looking to make a big statement. They left with a loss to Arizona State and plenty of hard questions to answer.
The Trojans got to a quick start, scoring on an 82-yard punt return by Tyler Vaughns. From there the first quarter was all Arizona State. The Sun Devils responded with two touchdowns to end the quarter.
The first score was a 44-yard touchdown pass from Manny Wilkins to N’keal Harry, who continues to play like one of the best receivers in the country. The second score was a 3-yard touchdown run by Eno Benjamin.
The Sun Devils continued to roll off points in the second, jumping out to a 24-7 lead after Benjamin easily ran through the USC defense for a 49-yard score. Benjamin was arguably the best player on the field in this game, as he ran the ball 29 times for 185 yards to go along with is two scores.
The Trojans mounted their comeback towards the end of the second half, as quarterback Jack Sears passed it to Michael Pittman Jr. for a 6-yard strike to make it 24-14 at halftime.
The third quarter led to two more USC scores to take the lead, as the Velus Jones scored from 8 yards out on his only carry, and then Pittman caught his second score of the day with a 36-yard grab.
Arizona State turned things back around after a sensational play by N’keal Harry. The potential Biletnikoff award winner took a punt 92 yards to the house to give ASU a 3-point lead towards the end of the third.
Manny Wilkins put the game away in the fourth with a 45 yard dazzling run for a touchdown, securing the Sun Devils 38-35 victory. USC falls to 4-4 and faces bottom dweller Oregon State next week, while Arizona State faces a top 25 opponent in Utah that will be a tough test after a tight contest this week.
