Maryland football has fired D.J. Durkin, leaving a vacancy at the head coaching position. Which candidates should be at the top of the Terps’ list?

After a messy, back-and-forth affair, DJ Durkin has been relieved of his duties at Maryland. Now the Terrapins need a head football coach for the 2019 season. Maryland does have a strong booster backing from UnderArmor’s Kevin Plank and Durkin was making a comfortable $2.5 million a season.

Durkin came to Maryland with one game as an interim head under his belt from him time at Florida. While at Maryland he’s put together a mediocre 10-15 record after Randy Edsall finished 22-34 as head coach of the Terps. Maryland is in a good but not spectacular recruiting area but has muddied those waters by being in the Big Ten instead of the ACC which is more regionally connected to the program.

Maryland football isn’t going to go after Greg Schiano, just stop. That’s not a good look for the Terps right now. Some of the Ohio-area names may not be ready to move around with Urban Meyer’s health and media issues; names like Ryan Day, Luke Fickell, and Jason Candle may hold tight until the Ohio State situation shakes out this winter. So who should the Terps target?

Here are the five most likely names for the Maryland head football coaching search.
