Clemson Football: 3 Takeaways from Tigers trouncing of Louisville
3. Clemson’s running game continues to show off
Clemson managed to run for a total of 492 yards today and could have easily topped 500 yards if they didn’t have their walk-ons in at the end of the game. The team as a whole averaged 13.3 yards per carry and there were five touchdowns scored on the ground today from four different people.
For the second time this season, Clemson had three running backs top 100 yards on the ground with Travis Etienne going for 153, Tavien Feaster going for 101, and freshman Lyn-J Dixon going for 116. Heisman contender Etienne averaged 19.1 yards per carry on eight total carries and continues to be the explosive back that Clemson has been missing since the departure of Andre Ellington in 2012.
The most notable touchdown rush did not come from Etienne, Feaster, or Dixon for that matter. Clemson pulled out their notorious goal line package and had defensive tackles Dexter Lawrence and Christian Wilkins line up at fullback and running back respectively with quarterback Trevor Lawrence under center at quarterback. Lawrence snapped the ball as Wilkins went out for the HB Sweep and he handed it off to Lawrence for a fullback score.
Clemson Wide Receiver Derion Kendrick entered the final drive of the game at quarterback and scrambled for 36 yards. Kendrick played quarterback for South Pointe High School last season and was listed as an athlete on his recruiting profile. Kendrick took snaps at quarterback showing that he could be in line for the job should all come crumbling down at the position by the end of the year.
