Utah Football: Disastrous fourth quarter dooms Utes vs Arizona State
3. The Pac-12 South is the most mediocre division in college football
Utah was a win away from taking a safe lead in the Pac-12 South. If the Utes had managed to defeat the Sun Devils they would have been sitting at 5-2, a game better than 4-3 Arizona with the tiebreaker controlled by Utah who beat Arizona earlier this season. Instead, Arizona State was victorious, meaning that every team in the Pac-12 South has at least three conference losses.
The bottom feeder, Colorado is 5-4 overall despite their 2-4 record in conference play. There aren’t any truly terrible teams in the division. UCLA, their rough start notwithstanding, has reeled off a pair of conference wins and looks to be finally clicking under Chip Kelly. There is no Rutgers, Kansas, Arkansas or Louisville in this division — every team is decidedly average.
The mediocrity most likely means whoever emerges from the Pac-12 South will be sacrificed to Washington State (or whomever wins the Pac-12 North) in the conference championship game. Even if this division doesn’t produce much in the way of a contender for the College Football Playoff or even a conference title, the level playing field means anyone can beat anyone. And that’s going to make for some fun football down the stretch.
