3. Pitt is now in control of the ACC Coastal Division

So here we are. I had mentioned in my preview of this game that whoever won this matchup controlled their own Conference destiny for the rest of the season. If the season ended tonight, we would see a 2016 rematch between a 5-4 Pittsburgh Panthers team and an 8-0 Clemson Tigers squad for the ACC Championship in Charlotte, NC.

As it stands right now, Pitt is at the top of the Coastal with a 4-1 record with the Virginia Tech Hokies right behind them with a 3-1 record. Virginia, Miami, and Georgia Tech still have chances of making it to the grand stage on December 1, 2018, but realistically Georgia Tech is already done. Virginia could still get in, but they need for Pittsburgh to lose two of their three final games of the season as well as win out against Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. Miami must win out against Duke, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, and Pittsburgh and hope that Virginia can lose one of their two conference games.

Pittsburgh’s path to the ACC Championship has to include wins over Virginia Tech, Wake, and Miami. If Pitt can beat Virginia Tech, they can afford a loss to Wake Forest but not to Miami. There’s luckily no chance at a three-way tie for the top spot and we should have a clear and concise winner at the end of the season. Who that is, is anyone’s guess at this point in time.
