West Virginia Football: 3 takeaways from Mountaineers’ thrilling win over Texas
Texas and West Virginia football faced off, looking to make some noise in the Big 12. What did we learn from this monster Big 12 bout?
Saturday’s big matchup between Texas and West Virginia football did not disappoint as it went down to the wire.
A treat for college football fans everywhere, the Mountaineers and Longhorns provided more clarity to the Big 12 standings. Going into the game, the two sides were tied for first in the conference, but with the win, West Virginia moves into a tie with Oklahoma and Texas essentially needs everything to go right to get to the conference title game.
The season is far from over, so we could potentially see a rematch in the Big 12 title game, and no one would be complaining — outside of fans from opposing Big 12 teams.
What’d we learn about West Virginia’s thrilling win over Texas?
3. Run game could set Mountaineers’ offense apart
Everyone knows West Virginia’s passing attack is arguably the best in the nation, led by Will Grier, but if the Mountaineers can continue running the ball like they did against Texas, they’re going to be awfully difficult to beat.
Martell Pettaway rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns on just nine carries and Kennedy McKoy added 94 yards. Will Grier even flashed some legs on a two-point conversion late in the game to give the Mountaineers a 42-41 lead.
If West Virginia continues this strong running attack, there won’t be a single defense in the Big 12 that will be able to stop the Mountaineers.
