The skinny

One of the more surprising results of the week was Tulane going on the road and dominating USF in a 41-15 shellacking in Tampa. Willie Fritz seems to have his Green Wave turning the corner and, at 4-5 with home games left against East Carolina and Navy, Tulane has a clear path to garnering bowl eligibility for the first time since 2013.

A week after a big win over USF, Houston was snubbed on Tuesday in the committee’s first playoff rankings. The Cougars responded by flopping on the road at SMU in a two touchdown loss. Houston’s high-powered offense was held in check, accumulating only 365 yards and 31 points. The Cougars fancied themselves as a legitimate contender to dethrone UCF in the AAC and make a run at a New Year’s Six bowl game. Houston could still get their crack at UCF in the AAC Championship game, but their shot at a New Year’s Six bowl game ended in Dallas.

Lane Kiffin’s encore performance in Boca hasn’t gone as expected, but the Owls are back in the projected bowl field after a 49-14 demolition of FIU on Saturday. FAU should now be able to squeeze two more wins with home games left against Western Kentucky and Charlotte.
