For a program with the stature of the Mississippi State Bulldogs of late, not having a single national title and only one conference title in program history is pretty shocking. Mississippi State often found itself firmly ranked inside the top 25 in the past five years, including a nice run with Dak Prescott back in 2014.

The reason why things could be so grim for Mississippi State in the next few years is the departure of former head coach Dan Mullen to join the Florida Gators. Mullen was the coach that took Mississippi State to new heights and made it a respectable team in the ever-difficult to contend in SEC West.

The fortunes of the Bulldogs are still pretty good in the first-year under former Penn State Nittany Lions offensive coordinator Joe Moorehead. But, that could take a turn for the worst if the recruiting and development of some underrated players doesn’t continue like it did under Mullen. The SEC West can swallow you up fast.

As recent as the end of the 2017 regular season saw why Mississippi State fans have a hard time trusting the consistent success from this team. Mississippi State was prominent in the SEC West for much of the 2017 campaign, but that all came crashing down in the Egg Bowl loss to the Ole Miss Rebels to cap it all off.
