1. Recruiting

LSU under Les Miles would not have been the program it was without the elite players continually pumped into the program from each successive recruiting class. The talent base in the state of Louisiana dwarfs what’s available in Lawrence, Kansas, but if anyone can attract a blue-chip player to the Jayhawks’ program it’s someone who’s blazed the trail before.

Talent plus coaching equals wins. That simple equation controls the college football world. Kansas has several options for their next head coach outside of Les Miles, but none of them can match Miles’ successes on the recruiting trail. That hands the university a decision. Will athletic director Jeff Long opt for a less experienced, fiery young coach looking to make his mark? Or will he stick with someone a bit more seasoned who knows how to find talent and get it in the door?

The 2019 Kansas football has one commitment and the Jayhawks haven’t fielded a Top-60 class at any point in David Beaty’s tenure. Finding talent needs to be a priority of this coaching search. If anyone can sit in a prospective recruits’ living room and convince them to come play football for Kansas, it’s Les Miles.
