Clemson Football: How Tigers can win 2018 ACC Championship
Clemson football has easily handled most of their competition during ACC play. They look to be on a collision course with Alabama in the College Football Playoff.
At the start of the season, it looked like Clemson football would be led by senior quarterback Kelly Bryant as they made their way back to the playoff. One of the most talented recruiting classes in the country was led by consensus No. 1 overall recruit in quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
Although Bryant was excellent running the football it was simply a matter of “when” not “if” Lawrence would become the starter this season. Lawrence was named the starter before the matchup against Syracuse and Bryant elected to transfer out of the program.
The game against Syracuse was a major scare, as Lawrence was injured and the offense relied on a three-touchdown performance from Travis Etienne to secure the victory.
The average score of the four ACC games that Lawrence has started has been 60-9. The Tigers’ offense has looked even better than Alabama’s, which is led by Heisman Trophy favorite Tua Tagovailoa.
With two ACC games left to close out the regular season against teams with winning records, the Tigers can potentially falter in one of those games. However, it doesn’t look likely. The other major stat besides the average score of those four ACC contests is the yard differential.
During this four-game stretch, Clemson is out-gaining opponents 590-284 per game. This team looks like they are destined to face Alabama in the college football playoff final. With Boston College and Duke left on the conference slate the Tigers should cruise to the ACC title game.
The conference championship will either be a matchup against Pittsburgh or Virginia, with the Panthers holding a half a game lead over Virginia. Neither of those teams should give the Tigers much trouble and the talent disparity could turn the title game into a blowout.
Clemson should be able to make quick work of their conference foes and make into the playoff with a 13-0 record.
