USC knew there would be some down days when they lost starting quarterback Sam Darnold to the NFL Draft. The shift to J.T. Daniels under center has gone as smoothly as one can ask when talking about a true freshman. Still, the Trojans are in danger of missing the postseason for the first time since 2011 when they were still dealing with NCAA sanctions from the Pete Carroll era.

That year, the Trojans were 10-2 under Lane Kiffin but were ineligible for postseason play. This time, if the Trojans miss a bowl game, it will be entirely due to their performance on the gridiron this season.

After opening the season 1-2 with back-to-back losses against Stanford and Texas, USC seemed to right the ship with three straight victories that brought them to 4-2 at the halfway point of the regular season. But losses in three of their past four games have put USC in a bind as they try to reach six wins.

USC needs only to beat UCLA or Notre Dame to ensure a spot in the postseason for the seventh straight year. That they are not yet eligible, though, is a testament to how far the Trojans have fallen in 2018.
