Colorado State football was celebrating a huge upset on a last-second Hail Mary pass, but it was ruled incomplete after an illegal touching penalty.

Anyone who has followed college football this season knows that Utah State is one of the nation’s most intriguing cinderella stories.

The Aggies nearly defeated Michigan State on the road to start the season and they followed that up by going 9-0 in the next 10 weeks, setting up a showdown against a disappointing Colorado State team in the second-to-last week of the season.

Colorado State put up quite the fight and looked to actually win the game on a last-second Hail Mary pass from Collin Hill to junior receiver Preston Williams.

The Aggies were about to lose their first game since the opener, but the referees deliberated and came back with the decision to rule the pass incomplete and game over because of an illegal touching call.

Watch the heartbreak here:

Everyone was talking about the upset, but the receiver stepped out of bounds before coming back in and being the first player to touch the ball.

There can’t be a more heartbreaking way to lose a game, especially since the celebration had already started and Rams fans were going wild in the crowd. Players were running from the sideline to celebrate with Hill and Williams, but the incomplete call absolutely deflated the crowd and took away a feel-good upset moment.

No, Colorado State won’t be heading to a bowl game this season, so the loss won’t mean much, on paper, but going from extreme high to the lowest low has to make you feel for these kids.
