2019 NFL Mock Draft: Projected first round after Week 12
By Dana Becker
It has become quite evident that if the New York Giants want to keep pace in the NFC and NFC East, they need an upgrade at quarterback. Eli Manning isn’t getting any younger, and the longer the Giants stick with the former Ole Miss standout, the longer it will take to climb back out of the hole they find themselves in.
Right now, New York has some great skill positions players in wide receivers Odell Beckham, Jr. and Sterling Shepard, along with running back Saquon Barkley. Giving Justin Herbert a year to learn under Manning would position the Giants to get right back into contention quickly.
Herbert is a big, strong quarterback, checking in at 6-foot-6 and weighing over 230 pounds. He has dealt with injuries during his three seasons at Oregon, but the Eugene native has always produced, completing almost 63 percent of his passes for over 6,500 yards and an incredible touchdown-to-interception ratio.
With Alex Tanney and Kyle Lauletta sitting behind the 37-year-old Manning on the depth chart, New York cannot afford to let someone with the skills of Herbert pass them by in the draft.
