3. Les Miles is back

Speaking of the Big 12, Les Miles is back, but this time in new colors. Kansas finalized its deal with Miles as he is set to becoming the Jayhawks’ head coach at the conclusion of the season.

Miles has been out of a coaching job since 2016 when he was let go from LSU. Since then, he has been on the radar and shortlists for a slew of Power Five teams that had head coaching vacancies.

Kansas has been a non-factor in the Big 12 as it owned one of the worst records of all time –– the most consecutive road losses in NCAA football history.

The Jayhawks have totaled just six wins in the last four seasons –– all coming under current head coach David Beaty. The university announced it was parting ways with Beaty at the beginning of November and the search party for a new head man went underway.

Miles was pinned as the next head coach to lead the Jayhawks and this comes after a two-year hiatus from coaching. The last season Miles coached at LSU (in 2016) the Tigers finished the season with an 8-4 record.

Miles has the opportunity to build the Kansas program from the ground up. The Jayhawks have been notoriously bad in the last decade and its last winning season was in 2008.

Miles will undoubtedly have a tall task ahead of him. He will have to challenge some of the bluebloods in college football –– including teams like Oklahoma and Texas –– while also facing others that are perennial top 25 teams in West Virginia and occasionally, Iowa State.

On top of that, the Big 12 seems to always put up huge offensive numbers with a lot of games resulting in a bevy of yards and points.

By all means, the position isn’t the easiest to step into. However, there is a highly rewarded prospect involved with the job. That is, the chance to upend the conference leaders and completely flip the script.

Only time will tell with what a Miles-led Kansas squad might be capable of as we will have to wait until next year to determine that, but it will certainly make for a more interesting storyline to follow next season.
