3. Texas isn’t ready for the big stage

The loss to Maryland in the Longhorns’ season opener was telling of the ceiling this Texas team would have in 2018. The team showed resiliency, winning six straight after the unfortunate start but there’s still something about Texas that isn’t championship caliber.

Kansas is holding down the bottom of the Big 12 standings. They’ve announced the dismissal of head coach David Beaty and confirmed the hiring of Les Miles. That gives plenty of hope for the future of the Jayhawks’ program but the 2018 team is flawed, at best.

Why then, should any faith be credited to Texas if they managed a one-touchdown lead over a three-win Kansas team? If they hadn’t found a way to beat Oklahoma earlier this season the optics of this program would look less rosy, and perhaps more accurate.

Texas proved their mediocrity on Friday, setting themselves up for what could be a painful trip to the conference championship game. Good but not great is a step in the right direction after years of failure, but Tom Herman is going to have to find a way to take this team to the next level, soon.
