Syracuse football went on the road to steal a win from an improved Boston College team. What’d we learn from the Orange victory?

Going on the road to steal a win over a team that has been in and out of the rankings all year isn’t easy in college football. Heck, no wins in college football come easy, but tell that to Syracuse which made it look rather pedestrian on Saturday afternoon, beating Boston College 42-21.

The Orange kept their strong season alive with a nice road win over the Eagles, improving to 9-3 on the season.

A major reason for the success on Saturday in Chestnut Hill? Eric Dungey’s toughness and ability to pick up yards both with his legs and his arm. He shook off an injury that he’d been fighting all week long and helped the Orange pick up a big road win to close out the regular season.

What’d we learn from the Orange’s big win over Boston College?

3. Defense stepped up when it needed to

Sure, AJ Dillon was knocked out in the first half and didn’t return, but even when he was healthy, he wasn’t all that effective against the Orange defense.

Syracuse is known more for its offense, but it turned to defense on multiple occasions, holding an improving Anthony Brown in check and even picking him off twice.

As for Dillon, he averaged just 4.7 yards per attempt on 12 carries against the Orange as they shut him down and made the offense relatively one-dimensional. Syracuse held Boston College to a total of 356 yards and the Eagles were just 5-of-15 on third-down conversions.

This Syracuse defense can be a problem when it decides to show up and it bounced back from a horrid showing against Notre Dame a week ago.

A resilient group this is.
