College Football 2018: 5 takeaways from Week 13
1. The rare SEC shootout makes history
In a conference that isn’t particularly known for high-scoring affairs, the SEC matchup between LSU and Texas A&M was one for the history books.
In a seven-overtime thriller, the Tigers and Aggies combined for an unprecedented 146 points in a game that resembled a college basketball score. Texas A&M outlasted LSU for a 74-72 victory. The combined points total was the most in FBS history.
Neither team was in contention for the playoff or the SEC, but there was still a lot to take away from the game.
Both teams are bowl eligible and will be playing in some form of a postseason game –– which is still yet to be determined. This game featured strong play by each of the quarterbacks.
For LSU, quarterback Joe Burrow was equally as good through the air as he was on the ground. He recorded three passing touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns. He also combined for 370 total yards, including 100 rushing yards.
Burrow’s counterpart in Kellen Mond was also in top form. He threw for six touchdowns on 287 yards while also picking up 42 yards on the ground and one touchdown.
Talk about a way to end the season. Scoring 72 points is normally a surefire way to win a football game, but not in this matchup.
If anything, the game captured the excitement provided by the college football overtime rules –– short distances to the end zone and after the third overtime, being forced to go for two instead of a PAT.
Both teams’ seasons aren’t over just yet, but because each has put together a fine season, they should both receive a quality bowl game invite.
