Group of Five Power Rankings, Week 14: Championship week hierarchy
By Zach Bigalke
This week’s Group of Five Power Rankings home in on the 10 title game participants. Which are the likeliest to earn the trip to a New Year’s Six bowl game?
Over the past three months of the 2018 college football season, we have taken a look at the top Group of Five teams every Wednesday. With the College Football Playoff and the affiliated New Year’s Six bowls incorporating an automatic bid for mid-major conference champions, the Group of Five Power Rankings afford a chance to see which smaller powerhouses are in line to play in a major bowl game.
But the fine print of that automatic bid reveals that it is only open to conference champions from the Group of Five leagues. That leaves both non-champions with strong records like Cincinnati as well as independent programs not named Notre Dame looking in from the outside.
With that stipulation in mind, this week’s Group of Five Power Rankings will look a little different. This week’s list ranks the teams that are still alive to win their respective conference championship games, showing who has a legitimate shot at getting into the game and who will need a lot of help to bust into one of the big bowls even with a conference title on the resume.
Who will be next in line if UCF fails to win with a backup quarterback guiding their offense against Memphis? Keep reading to see where all of the conference championship game participants fall in the mid-major pecking order in this week’s Group of Five Power Rankings.
