Texas Tech football could be aiming to hire Utah State head coach Matt Wells, but that would be a nightmare scenario for the Red Raiders.

Parting ways with Kliff Kingsbury was bittersweet for Texas Tech as the former Red Raider quarterback turned head coach put everything he had into his alma mater and turned things around in a dark time.

The direction Texas Tech could be headed in would make all the progress that Kingsbury made essentially fly right out the window.

According to reports, the Red Raiders could be looking at Utah State’s Matt Wells as the lead candidate for the job.

No, this isn’t me necessarily bashing Wells as I think what he’s done for Utah State this year, and over the past five years, has been incredible. He has led a team that no one expected to contend after a 6-7 season in 2017 to a 10-2 regular season record, nearly upending Boise State for the division title.

Still, Wells is a first-time head coach with no truly dominant runs at Utah State. Not many Group of Five coaches get looks at Power Five programs just two years after going 3-9 — in his fourth year with Utah State, nonetheless.

Look, if Texas Tech wants to take that next step as a program, it needs to go for a more established coach with consistent success. Wells has an opportunity to work his way up, but he has just two 10-win seasons in six years with the Aggies and three seasons with six or less losses.

One of the comments on the original tweet says it all — Texas Tech would be trading a 38-38 record from Kingsbury for 44-34 from Wells and the two have faced very different competition. The overwhelming risk is not worth it.
