9. Oklahoma State

There haven’t been many teams more frustratingly inconsistent than the ‘Pokes of Stillwater. Simultaneously talented enough to take down highly ranked teams such as Texas and West Virginia, while being erratic enough to get blown out by Texas Tech and Kansas State.

Expectations for Oklahoma State were mild heading into the season, as they sat at the very edge of the Coaches Poll at No. 25 and on the outside looking in for the AP Poll. The hype train began rolling, however, after an impressive win over Boise State in Week 3; the Cowboys leaped up to No. 15 in the AP Poll, and looked like a legitimate Big 12 contender.

They fell on their face at home against Texas Tech before rebounding with a win over Kansas. They lost a hard-fought home game to Iowa State before getting embarrassed by Kansas State in the Little Apple. They bounced back again by knocking off then No. 6 Texas, but then lost on the road to Baylor.

They came up agonizingly short against Oklahoma before adding their second Top 10 skin to the wall by beating West Virginia. They couldn’t handle that success, either, and dropped their final game of the regular season on the road against TCU.

It’s obvious that the Cowboys were talented enough to compete for a Big 12 Championship, but they constantly let their guard down and played to the level of their competition.

The ‘Pokes are good enough to play with anyone in the country, but they could never string together consistent performances week-in and week-out, which left them with a .500 finish to the regular season.
