7. Arizona

Teaming Kevin Sumlin with Khalil Tate in Tucson seemed to be a match made in Heaven, but it never really clicked and the Wildcats finished the season 5-7 and won’t be eligible to play in a bowl game this season.

Arizona wasn’t ranked in either poll entering the year, but they received votes in both and were a trendy pick to win the PAC-12 South with a chance to compete for a berth in the Rose Bowl.

Tate was one of college football’s most dynamic players in 2017, but lingering injuries hampered his development this year. Rumors are that a split between Tate and Arizona could be coming, as the QB is thought to be testing the waters for a potential transfer. There would be no shortage of suitors for the dynamic signal-caller.

The Wildcats had the opportunity to salvage bowl eligibility by taking down rival Arizona State at home last weekend, but they blew a 19-point fourth quarter lead to finish the season with a bitter taste left in the mouths of the faithful.

Sumlin was a popular hire coming to Arizona after being let go from Texas A&M where he went 51-26 over his six seasons. But that opinion has shifted after one disappointing season, and while he isn’t on the hot seat at the moment, another season where the Wildcats fail to even garner bowl eligibility could lead to a much warmer seat.
