A difficult time for the Louisville football program was marked by a widespread negative fan reaction to the Jeff Brohm coaching news.

The downfall of the Louisville football program started after the former Heisman winning quarterback Lamar Jackson bolted for the NFL one year early. That all culminated to the firing of former head Louisville football coach Bobby Petrino this year. A frantic head coaching search followed the firing of Petrino for Louisville football, largely to no avail so far.

The potential replacements for the Louisville head football coach proceeding the Petrino-era is pretty lengthy now. At the top of the list originally was Jeff Brohm, the head coach of the Purdue Boilermakers. Names that should still remain high on the coaching candidate list for Louisville football include North Texas head coach Seth Littrell, Appalachian State head coach Scott Satterfield, and a host of accomplished Power Five coordinators.

Headlines that announced that Brohm intended to pass on the Louisville football job and stay with Purdue was ensued by chaos. Fans burning Louisville jerseys, throwing hate Brohm’s way, and even one local high school having to shut down classes for one day due to the news encompasses just a few things that ensued.

Per reports from the Washington Post, the man that made threats to Brohm’s former high school in Louisville, KY, was arrested soon after. This was the news that got most out of control for something that stems far beyond the relevance of a coaching search.

The jersey burning was in reference to Jeff’s brother, Brian Brohm, who played quarterback at Louisville around a decade back. This was all according to the Journal & Courier. Brian was a solid quarterback at Louisville for a few years before enduring a short NFL career.

These events are just the type of thing that shouldn’t happen when bad news comes across in a coaching search. A patient coaching search needs to transpire to make sure that Louisville has the right candidate for the job to rebuild this program effectively to compete in the ACC.

This is a difficult time for the University of Louisville athletic department in general. Between the Petrino firing amid a down football season and all the controversy surrounding former head basketball coach Rick Pitino, Louisville is amid a big transitional period.

In the three years with Jackson as the starting quarterback, the Louisville Cardinals saw a good amount of success and usually found itself ranked in the top 25. That success all came crashing down this fall, but an opportunity for a good rebuild this year was mostly squandered by the fan base’s reaction to the initial part of the coaching search.
