Georgia Football: Bulldogs deserve College Football Playoff berth
2. Georgia has great wins and “great” losses
An Alabama win would have been the icing on the cake, but Georgia’s previous victories stack up favorably with all the other one-loss teams. As things currently stand, Georgia has three wins over Playoff-ranked Top 25 teams. That’s the same amount as Oklahoma and Ohio State (if they beat Northwestern).
Ranked Wins | Losses | |
---|---|---|
Georgia | No. 9 Florida | No. 10 LSU |
No. 15 Kentucky | No. 1 Alabama | |
No. 24 Missouri | ||
Ohio State | No. 7 Michigan | UR Purdue |
No. 12 Penn St | ||
No. 21 Northwestern | ||
Oklahoma | No. 14 Texas | No. 14 Texas |
No. 16 West Virginia | ||
No. 23 Iowa State |
Ohio State will likely knock Northwestern out of the Top 25 with a win and is the only team of these three to lose to an unranked opponent. Oklahoma doesn’t have any wins over a Top 10 team and Iowa State should drop from the ranks with a narrow win over Drake as a 41-point favorite. Meanwhile, both of Georgia’s losses come to Top-10 teams.
The Alabama loss counts on paper, but if there is any acceptable loss, is it not a loss to the defending national champions who have beaten everyone else by a mile? Could Ohio State and Oklahoma beat Alabama? It’s possible, but Georgia’s performance was close enough to give them the biggest benefit of the doubt if Alabama were to meet any of these squads in the Playoff.
