Virginia Tech Football: Hokies top Marshall to secure longest bowl streak
Virginia Tech football didn’t have the season they were hoping for, but a win over Marshall was enough to send the Hokies to a bowl for the 26th consecutive season.
Lost in the mix of conference championship games, Virginia Tech played one final game against Marshall with hopes of extending their nation-best 25-year bowl streak. The Hokies ran away from the Thundering Herd early, leaving no doubt as to the final result of this one before the halftime whistle.
Marshall ends the season 8-4 (6-2) second in Conference USA East to Middle Tennessee. Virginia Tech finishes 6-6 (4-4) fifth in the ACC Coastal and the sixth team in their division to qualify for the postseason. What did we learn about the Hokies and the Herd in their final regular season game?
1. And then there was one
Virginia Tech scheduled the game against Marshall for one reason, gaining bowl eligibility. Nobody likes sitting at home on their couch and watching others play in postseason games, but the phenomena would have been particularly unnerving for the Hokies who have played in a bowl game every season since the last 1993, a streak of 25 seasons which extends to 26 in a row this year.
Florida State held the longest streak of 36-consecutive bowl appearances entering 2018, but a loss to rival Florida on the final week of the regular season saw that streak snapped. Now Virginia Tech is the only school in the country with a streak of 25 or more bowl games, the next closest (including this season) will be Georgia (22), Oklahoma (20), LSU (18) and Boise State (17).
