3. Two blue bloods squaring off in a historic bowl

Two of the most prestigious programs in college football history facing off in New Orleans in a bowl game that has been around since 1935. Does it get much better than this outside of the playoff?

Historically, Georgia and Texas haven’t squared off much over the years, despite the rich tradition and the high-profile games each have played in during the postseason. This is the first meeting since the 1984 Cotton Bowl, and just the fifth time the programs have squared off in history. A home-and-home has been scheduled between the two in 2028-29, but this Sugar Bowl will have to hold us over until the two on-campus matchups.

In the last meeting, Georgia’s 10-9 upset win over then-undefeated and No. 2 Texas in the Cotton Bowl kept the Longhorns from a national championship. Texas would have almost certainly earned at least a split of the title had they knocked off the Bulldogs, with No. 1 Nebraska falling to No. 5 Miami (FL), and allowing Howard Schnellenberger to capture the school’s first national championship.

The stakes aren’t as big as that 1984 game, with neither team in position to make a claim for a national championship, but there’s always something special about watching two of the premier programs in the history of the sport facing off in a historic venue.

Bevo vs. UGA. The burnt orange against the red and black. Austin vs. Athens.

It doesn’t get much better than this.
