Kirby Smart didn’t waste any time following Justin Fields decision to transfer from Georgia football. The Dawgs have signed another quarterback.

Smart snagged a signing from top quarterback recruit and four-star prospect Dwan Mathis Wednesday during the early signing period, bringing in the teammate of 2020 five-star offensive lineman Justin Rogers. The move could pay dividends on both ends for Smart and Georgia moving forward.

Rogers posted a video of Mathis making his decision, adding the hashtag “GoDawgs” with it:

While Jake Fromm has put a lock on the starting quarterback job after back-to-back standout seasons, the Bulldogs were still able to bring in Fields last year. But reports have started trickling out that Fields is planning to leave Athens, which would give Mathis the chance to secure the backup quarterback role almost immediately.

Mathis was poised to sign with Ohio State, but Smart and his coaching staff talked him into deciding to compete in the SEC over the Big Ten. He joins fellow 2019 quarterback John Rhys, who is more of a dual-threat compared to the pro-style Mathis in the upcoming class.

The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Mathis helped lead Oak Park High School to a 9-2 record this past season. He previously committed to Michigan State before giving his verbal to Ohio State.

The move by Mathis is a big one for Smart as he joins an incoming recruiting class that includes running back Kenny McIntosh, wide receivers Makiya Tongue and Dominick Blaylock, and offensive linemen Warren McClendon, Xavier Truss and Clay Webb.

If Fields does leave, Fromm would be the lone scholarship quarterback on the roster for Georgia. He led the team to the national championship game last year and an 11-2 record this past season.

The move by Mathis to decide to spurn Ohio State for Georgia could also be pivotal in talk that Fields is planning to join the Buckeyes once he completes his paperwork with Georgia.
