Winning battles in the trenches is huge for a team that expects to compete for a national title year in and year out and Georgia sured up their offensive line for the 2019 season with the signing of five-star center Clay Webb. He was the No. 1 Center in the 2019 recruiting class and he was also the No. 22 ranked recruit of the 2019 class according to 247Sports.

Webb played offensive guard/tackle in high school but given that he’s stepping on campus at 6-3 and 295 pounds he’s expected to be pushed to the inside. The Oxford product committed to the Bulldogs on Dec. 10 over Alabama and Auburn and has already enrolled in spring classes. He was an Under Armor All-American and participated in The Opening earlier this year.

Given that Georgia landed this kid is huge considering Oxford, Ala., is almost two hours away from both Auburn and Tuscaloosa.

Georgia hasn’t shied away from playing younger guys on the offensive line. Cade Mays, Trey Hill, Jamaree Salyer and Isaiah Wilson are all freshman and all saw significant time along the offensive line this season and began the season at varying spots in the two-deep. A player of Clay Webb’s caliber is sure to see some time this season, especially at center.

The center position is a spot where the player is only noticed when things go wrong and that’s why most left tackles can play at any spot along the offensive line outside of the center. Georgia’s veteran center Lamont Gaillard is set to graduate which means that Georgia will look for a new snapper in 2019.

Webb can play anywhere in the interior of the line and might sneak outside against lesser competition given that he’s undersized for a tackle. He and rising sophomore Trey Hill will both be jockeying for that open spot in the depth chart but both should see time in 2019 regardless.
