3. Dwan Mathis, QB
Sometimes gambles just don’t pay off. A generational talent and former five-star recruit, quarterback Justin Fields has elected to transfer from the Georgia Bulldogs after throwing only 39 passes in mop-up duty for the Bulldogs entrenched starter Jake Fromm. With Fromm cemented as the starting quarterback and Fields gone, the Bulldogs are left with Matthew Downing, Mason Wood and John Seter.
Enter, Dwan Mathis.
Mathis had a long list of commitments before finally committing and signing with Georgia. His initial commitment was to Matt Campbell and the Iowa State Cyclones and flipped to Michigan State in January.
Later in the year, he would de-commit from the Spartans and hop on board with Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Mathis assured the school that he was willing to stay committed to Ohio State despite Ryan Day taking over but then a spot opened up at Georgia. The early signee from Belleville, Mich., mentioned that Georgia has only one quarterback on their roster and he had the best chance of playing at Georgia.
Mathis was an Elite 11 Finalist and recruiting sites seemed inconclusive on what to consider him. 247Sports lists him as their No. 9 ranked pro-style quarterback and the No. 261 player overall while Scout has him listed as their No. 2 ranked dual-threat and the No. 102 player overall. ESPN has Mathis as their No. 15 quarterback and No. 299 in their top 300. He is an elusive signal-caller who can make the throws that Georgia needs him to make.
While his decision-making is great, he’s laking in the arm talent that Fromm and Fields boasted and has too long of a delivery. He’s also 6-5 and has the potential to put on weight when Scott Sinclair gets a hold of him.
I’m not trying to say that Mathis is going to walk on campus and challenge Fromm for his job and I’m not saying that he can take them to the national title in his freshman season as a backup. I am saying that the quarterback room has a good talent to go behind Fromm without having to drop to a third-string player. Mathis was a sigh of relief, a breath of fresh air for Georgia fans and could develop into their next quarterback with some tweaks here and there.
