1. Talent Gap

It’s no secret that when a bowl game has a result like this one, the talent gap between the winning team and the losing team is a pretty large one and that’s exactly the case between Auburn and Purdue. Auburn came into the 2018 season off a ten-win season in the SEC and returning star players such as quarterback Jarrett Stidham and defensive linemen Derrick Brown and Marlon Davidson.

While it didn’t come together in the regular season for the Tigers, mainly because of conflicts between Gus Malzahn and offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, they definitely put it together to end their season on a high note. It also helped that Jarrett Stidham decided to suit up for Auburn after declaring for the 2019 NFL Draft, citing “unfinished business”.

This isn’t a knock on Purdue whatsoever, but Auburn has the talent of a top 10 team in college football, it just didn’t work out this year.
