The false allure of trying to land Urban Meyer

With Urban Meyer retiring from his time as the coach at Ohio State, it is tempting to think that the Irish might be able to lure the former national champion with both the Buckeyes and the Florida Gators to what he has long considered a dream job. But as he sets up to move into an administrative role at Ohio State, there is no reason to think he has any desire to immediately return to a sideline.

The Fighting Irish could certainly pay off any buyouts that would be necessary to get Meyer out of contract at Ohio State and get him to South Bend. But, just like when he decided to step away from another comfortable situation at Florida, there is no indication that Meyer is leaving for any reason other than his health and his family.

Notre Dame could justify ditching a coach like Brian Kelly if they knew they already had a guy like Meyer in the bag. But they don’t have him lined up, and despite his talk in the past there is no reason to think that he is actually going to pick up and leave Columbus for what is at best a lateral move.
