1. Brian Kelly has reached his ceiling

Notre Dame has come close to reaching the pinnacle of college football twice under coach Kelly. Both instances have ended in complete disaster. The previously unbeaten Irish were blasted 42-14 in the 2013 BCS Championship Game and the game wasn’t really that close. Alabama led 28-0 at half time and tacked on a few touchdowns after the half for good measure.

Running into the Nick Saban buzzsaw once is forgivable, but Kelly’s second chance at a national title was met with equally disheartening results. Facing Clemson in the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Cotton Bowl, Notre Dame was once again embarrassed when the national spotlight shined the brightest.

The two teams traded first quarter field goals before Clemson exploded for 27 unanswered points. Before Notre Dame could blink, it was 23-3 and the game was essentially over.

A program as prestigious as Notre Dame should have to settle for routine failures on the biggest stages. Whether Kelly is being compared to Dabo Swinney or Saban, he’s proven on the field he’s no match for either man or their respective teams.
