4. Notre Dame can’t find a better recruiter

Not only does Meyer need Notre Dame, the reverse is also true. When Meyer was in the midst of two national titles in three years at Florida he was signing Top 5 recruiting classes. Things didn’t change when he went to Ohio State. After taking over following the 2011 season, Meyer finished inside the Top 5 every year except for one, 2015 when his team finished sixth.

Notre Dame hasn’t been on that level of recruiting for some time. The Irish have one Top 5 class this decade (2013) led by their push to the BCS Championship Game. Outside of that one great year, Notre Dame has finished somewhere near the No. 10 to No. 15 class for the entirety of Kelly’s tenure.

The difference in five to 10 recruiting ranks is seismic. Miami, Michigan, USC and UCLA have all been consistently near the Top 10 over the past seven seasons. During that time they’ve all gone through head coaches at least once and failed to achieve a commensurate level of success when compared to their status as college football blueblood programs

If Notre Dame wants to win on the big stage they need more talent. Few are better at getting that kind of talent on campus than Meyer.
