Texas A&M football star running back Trayveon Williams etched his name into the records books on a monster touchdown run in the Gator Bowl against NC State.

The days of the air raid are long gone in College Station. The Aggies transitioned to a pro-style system under new head coach Jimbo Fisher in 2018 and the results have been extraordinary, particularly for star running back Trayveon Williams.

Two years prior Williams became the first true freshman in school history to crack 1,000 yards rushing in a single season. His numbers dipped a bit in his sophomore campaign, setting up what could have been a make or break season under Fisher in 2018. Not only did Williams rise to the occasion, he surpassed even the loftiest expectations.

Williams led the SEC during the regular season with 1,524 and 15 rushing touchdowns. That total came just shy of school leader Darren Lewis‘ 1,692 rushing yards in 1988. Williams needed 168 yards to break the record, a big number, but one which Williams had gone over three times already this season.

It looked like things would come down to the wire entering the fourth quarter of Texas A&M’s Gator Bowl game against NC State. Then Williams took an ordinary handoff, hit the hole and disappeared down the field. No. 5 bolted 93 yards to the endzone, mostly untouched, to claim the Texas A&M single-season rushing record. He finishes 2018 with 1,760 rushing yards, most in school history.

One touchdown run defines Williams’ remarkable career, one that could perhaps be ending soon. The junior has a decision to make on his NFL future in the coming days. His explosiveness would make several NFL teams happy, but Aggies everywhere are hoping he sticks around for his senior season.
