Ohio State Football: Buckeyes to land mega-transfer Justin Fields
By Dana Becker
Justin Fields has found his new home. The former five-star quarterback is set to enroll in Columbus and join Ohio State football in the coming days.
According to a report by Lettermen Row, Fields is “expected on campus with the Buckeyes later in the afternoon and set to move in this weekend ahead of the resumption of classes, clearing the way for him to participate in the offseason program and spring practice.”
Fields entered into the NCAA Transfer Portal late last month, clearing the first hurdle towards his exit from Georgia. The true freshman was unable to claim the starting job from incumbent Jake Fromm, seeing action in every game this past year outside of the Sugar Bowl. He threw for 328 yards, ran for 266 and had eight combined touchdowns.
While Fields would likely have to sit a season if he does enroll at Ohio State, he has a possible out to get on the field next year. This past October, a Georgia baseball player was kicked off the team for using racial slurs geared towards Fields. It is possible that he uses that as a way to try and gain immediate eligibility to play under new Ohio State head coach Ryan Day.
The current Buckeye depth chart includes Haskins, who is expected to enter the NFL Draft, redshirt sophomore Tate Martell, who was a standout at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, and Matthew Baldwin.
Haskins, who led Ohio State to a Big Ten title, win in the Rose Bowl and was a finalist for the Heisman, told the site that Fields is “a freak of nature. He’s a really good person, too.” The two worked out over the summer with former Clemson standout Deshaun Watson and Haskins added “you can see how much he wants to learn and how much he’s willing to commit himself to being great.”
It is believed that Fields also was interested in transferring to Oklahoma, Florida State or UCLA.
