Clemson Football: Dabo’s Tigers crush Alabama, stun Saban and win title
Why the Committee was “right”
The word “right” is in parenthesis because we can only definitively say that the Committee was half right. But, in all reality, getting it half right is all that really matters.
There’s a lot to be said about the fact that all but one team ranked No. 3 through No. 9 lost their bowl game. But for now, let’s completely ignore that.
The purpose of a playoff is to pit the top teams against each other with the reasonable assumption that the last team standing will be confirmed, the best team.
It was abundantly clear, that after this game..correction..within the first quarter, Alabama and Clemson were the two very best teams in college football this season.
And therefore, no matter who was in the top four in the College Football Playoff Rankings, so long as Alabama and Clemson were included, the College Football Playoff Committee was right.
Anybody could have filled the No. 3 and 4 spots. But so long as Alabama and Clemson filled the first two spots, in either order, the committee was “right”.
Alabama already beat Georgia, proving they were better. UCF, Ohio State…Army? Nope, not even in the same ballpark as Clemson or Alabama. Regardless of the qualms anyone has with the processes and methods of the Committee, none of it matters as long as the two best teams play in the National Championship Game.
These two teams were the best all-around teams in the nation. They dominated both their regular season games as well as their playoff semifinal game.
