Baylor Football: Matt Rhule needs to make NFL decision
Baylor football was once again kept in limbo as head coach Matt Rhule weighed NFL head coaching jobs this offseason. The Bears need him to commit, one way or another.
Matt Rhule surprised many when he left Temple to take over as the head coach at Baylor. The Art Briles’ scandal and fallout was still fresh in Waco and the job wasn’t considered one of the more desirable locals for an up-and-coming coach. Still, Rhule made the decision to step in.
After one win and a slow start in year one, Rhule rebounded with a seven-win 2018 campaign capped off with a Texas Bowl victory. Rather than talking about what the Bears could do in 2019, though, the latest rumors have circled around Rhule and another potential NFL suitor.
Rhule came close to being named the next head coach of the Indianapolis Colts last year. This time around it was the New York Jets who came extremely close to plucking Rhule from Waco. His constant links to the professional game and countless interviews each offseason make it clear, Rhule doesn’t have any intention to stick around at Baylor and build something special.
His desire to move upward is part of the coaching world, but it doesn’t have to be a part of Baylor’s world. To some extent, Rhule’s constant flirtation is a distraction that’s bad for recruiting and for the team already on campus. For Rhule’s own sake, and for Baylor’s, something has to be done. Either Matt Rhule wants to go to the NFL or he wants to stay in college, Baylor hopes its the former, but if it’s not, they’d be better off moving on now than later.
