The Iowa football team continues to lose key pieces – especially on the offensive side of the ball – after tight end T.J. Hockenson announced plans to enter the NFL draft.

Hockenson joins fellow tight end Noah Fant as players declaring early for the draft. Iowa has also lost defensive back Amani Hooker and defensive lineman Anthony Nelson to decisions.

The winner of the John Mackey Award, given annually to the top tight end in the nation, Hockenson finished his redshirt sophomore season with 49 catches for 760 yards and six touchdowns.

“After tremendous thought and consideration, I have made the decision to declare for the 2019 NFL draft,” Hockenson posted on social media. “This was a very difficult decision because of the love and respect I have for the University of Iowa, Coach Kirk Ferentz and the entire coaching staff, along with my teammates.

“However, my dream has always been to play in the NFL and I believe now is the right time. I want to thank everyone in the Hawkeye Football program for challenging me to become a better player and person.

“I look forward to this next chapter and grateful that I was first and always will be an Iowa Hawkeye.”

The 6-foot-5, 250-pounder had a breakout season as a freshman last year, catching 24 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns. He concludes his two-year career in Iowa City with 73 receptions for 1,080 yards and nine touchdowns, averaging just under 15 yards per reception.

Iowa went 9-4 this past year, including a win over Mississippi State in its bowl game. While Nathan Stanley plans to return to lead the offense after throwing for 2,852 yards and 26 touchdowns, he will be without Hockenson, Fant and Nick Easley.
