Miami Football: What to make of Tate Martell’s commitment to Hurricanes
By Dana Becker
Former high school national champion quarterback Tate Martell has decided on his next stop, confirming plans to enroll and play for Miami football.
Martell, a five-star recruit out of the Bishop Gorman High School factory in Las Vegas, announced he would leave Ohio State after Justin Fields moved from Georgia to Columbus recently.
“Right back like we never left,” Martell posted on Twitter late Tuesday night. “I’M A HURRICANE!”

According to a report, Martell is going to try and become eligible to play this coming fall instead of sitting out an entire year with the Hurricanes by graduating from Ohio State in the spring. Miami named Manny Diaz head coach after the retirement of Mark Richt.
Martell saw action in just a handful of games this past year for the Buckeyes, completing 23-of-28 passes for 269 yards with one touchdown. The 5-foot-11 dual-threat also ran for 128 yards on 22 carries, scoring twice more.
As a prep, Martell overcame his lack of size with his playmaking ability, leading Bishop Gorman to three consecutive unbeaten seasons. He threw for over 7,500 yards and 113 touchdowns with just nine interceptions. As a senior, he was 124-for-200 for 2,537 yards with 40 touchdowns and two interceptions.
Martell also ran for 2,294 yards in his high school career with 35 more touchdowns. As a sophomore for Gorman, he had over 3,500 yards of total offense with 62 touchdowns combined in the air and on the ground.
Miami finished this past season 7-6 overall and 4-4 in the ACC, losing 35-3 to Wisconsin in the Pinstripe Bowl. N’Kosi Perry threw for 1,091 yards with 13 touchdowns as a redshirt freshman, but was in and out of the lineup due to several decisions made on and off the field.
Malik Rosier was a two-year starter for the Hurricanes, finishing with over 4,500 yards and 34 touchdowns, but also throwing 25 interceptions.
At Miami, Martell will be reunited with former Bishop Gorman teammates Brevin Jordan and Bubba Bolden. Jordan saw action in 12 games this past year with 11 starts as a true freshman. Jordan had 32 receptions for 287 yards and four touchdowns. Bolden, meanwhile, is transferring from USC where he was suspended by the university — not the football team — in 2018.
